About Me

My photo
Hi. I live in Canberra, Australia, and started tatting early in 2009. Consequently, I've now caught the 'tatting bug' and hope to be infected for a long while.

Motif 8

This interlaced medallion is from Judith Connor's book Creative tatting with beads, shuttle and needle. It used Altin Basak size 30. I'd really LOVE to buy this book, but it is no longer being printed :( Amazon is selling it for about $111 US dollars. Bit too expensive for me........

I used a split ring technique between row 2 and row 3. Not a very pretty attempt, but hopefully I will get better with practice.

  1. Your motif is very pretty. I may have to give that one a try. The book appears to be available at Be-Stitched, here is a direct link:

This is for the US title of the book. For some reason the book was renamed when released in the States. The patterns contained are apparently the same.

  3. Hi Vanessa,

I've tried in vain to find the split ring climb-out but can't see it! I myself have never tried this technique (after 20 years of tatting!), so I'm impressed! I'm also impressed with this celtic motif - very attractive and a nice job. Your leaf in the prior post is also nicely done. I'd never guess you are a new tatter.

I'd also like to know more about Australia. Am I correct that you're heading into summer now? We're trying to enjoy the last weeks of summer here, although Fall can be quite nice. It's Winter I can't handle!

  4. Hi Kathy
This was my first attempt at a split 'anything'. I think that I was actually meant to do a split chain rather than a split ring. Unfortunately I didn't realise that there was such a thing as a split chain....

Like the majority of tatters, I teach myself from books and quite often 'don't know what I don't know'.

As for Australia, we entered spring a couple of weeks ago. In Canberra it is still reasonably cool weather, but not sub-zero like it is in winter. Being a large island, the temperature varies between each state. Northern Australia never reaches freezing point in winter.

It is a good country to live in (unbiased opinion of course......)

    Which country are you from?

  5. Hi again, Vanessa!

I'm from the USA - Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania to be be exact. (I plan to finally fill in the 'Profile' section in my blog soon!) Fellow tatter/blogger Carol Lawecki also lives in the area, and her Mom (who taught her to tat) is a member of the tatting group I belong to that demonstrates tatting at various festivals in the area. Generally a great place to live, but now that my husband and I are retired, we're hoping to 'escape' winter by going to one of the southern states for at least a month. It's a lifelong dream of mine! Love the ocean and palm trees!

I can do the split ring, but haven't quite got the 'hang' of the split chain yet!
